If you’re craving soft, white sand, ocean waves, and unforgettable family memories — let me introduce you to one of our favorite hidden gems: Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Alabama.

Here’s everything you need to know to plan your own magical, memory-making beach escape — from where to stay to what to do and where to eat — all from a mom who knows the value of fun and easy travel. Don’t miss our Instagram video highlights from our trips here.

How We Got There (Stress-Free Travel!)

We hopped on a nonstop Allegiant flight from Kansas City (MCI) and landed in Gulf Shores at a small, calm, and easy-to-navigate airport — a dream when you’re flying with kids. No big crowds. No rushing through terminals. Just a quick pickup, short drive, and boom — toes in the sand.

Keep in mind these dreamy flights are seasonal for summer. We’ve also road tripped to Gulf Shores and while not as convenient, the trip was equally fabulous!

Where to Stay

Gulf Shores and Orange Beach have a variety of amazing stay options depending on the kind of trip you want.

For a laid-back, peaceful retreat with extended family:

A few years ago, we rented a house on West Beach in Gulf Shores with my parents and siblings. Our beach house had:

• A pool + pier on the Little Lagoon (perfect for fishing every day!)

• A quick walk across the street to the beach

• Room for everyone

• We used Instacart to stock the kitchen and soaked up that slow, simple beach life.

I highly recommend this option if you’re traveling with a bigger group or want more privacy.

For a central, family-of-four trip close to everything:

This year, we stayed at the Best Western The Tides Hotel — and it was absolutely perfect.

• Gulf-front room with a balcony (we watched dolphins daily and loved the changing colors of the sky at sunrise and sunset)

• Small and quiet, which we really appreciated

• Easy beach access + on-site beach chair rentals

• Heated pool, hot tub, and lit-up pool area at night

• Coffee bar, breakfast, and pizza available onsite

Bonus memory: One night, we saw lights all up and down the beach and joined families out with flashlights spotting ghost crabs! Such a fun and unexpected adventure!

What to Do

This area has so much to offer beyond the beach!

Bike the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail

We reserved bikes from Beach Bike Rentals and explored 10 miles of gorgeous trails, including scenic boardwalks and wildlife views inside Gulf State Park. It’s award-winning and totally customizable — ride as much or as little as you want.

Fish from Gulf State Park Pier

No fishing license needed for kids, and they’ll love the chance to spot stingrays, dolphins, and sea creatures from the pier.

Kayak Perdido Pass Islands

We rented kayaks and paddled between Robinson Island, Bird Island and Walker Island. Calm waters, beautiful views — such a peaceful way to explore.

Explore The Wharf

On our last trip, we spent an evening at The Wharf and had a blast:

• Waterfront dining

• Ferris wheel ride

• SPECTRA Sound + Light Show

Perfect combo of fun and relaxation after a beach day.

Mini Golf

Our family loves a good competitive round of mini golf, and Gulf Shores has some great ones! Our favorites:

• Adventure Island Mini Golf

• Beachside Mini Golf

• Pirate’s Island Adventure Golf

Where to Eat

LuLu’s Gulf Shores

200 East 25th Ave., Gulf Shores, AL

This place checks every box:

• Incredible food (don’t miss the Fried Crab Claws + Key West Bowl!)

• Right on the Intracoastal Waterway

• Huge sand play area, ropes course, arcade

• Live music and a laid-back, kid-friendly vibe

And yes, I had to try the legendary Bushwacker cocktail — like a grown-up milkshake. Cheers to 50 years of the Bushwacker!

The Hangout Gulf Shores

We had so much fun here. Expect:

• Live music

• Yard games

• Staff breaking into dance on the tables

It’s high-energy and totally unique — plan to stay a while and enjoy the show! Don’t miss the epic Shark Attack drink — and they make a non-alcoholic version for the kids too.

Other yummy spots we enjoyed:

• Cactus Cantina Mexican Grill – We loved the Gulf Fish Tacos, and I really enjoyed my Rainbow Margarita

• Pete’s Ice Cream and Donuts + Scoops Olde Fashion Ice Cream – Classic vacation treats!

• Breakfast at Duck Diner – I had to have the special Banana Stuffed French Toast… wow!

Final Thoughts from This Midwest Mom

Whether you’re traveling with toddlers, tweens, or teens — Gulf Shores and Orange Beach offer the perfect balance of relaxation and adventure. You don’t need passports, you don’t need weeks off work, and you definitely don’t need to spend a fortune.

This is the kind of trip that gives you:

• Early morning coffee walks with your toes in the sand

• Big belly laughs over fresh seafood and sunset views

• Nights spent chasing ghost crabs and stargazing

• And memories your family will talk about for years

So if you’re dreaming of a family-friendly beach escape that’s surprisingly close to Kansas City… this is it.
