My kids, ages 5 and 7, absolutely LOVE Kiwi Crate! Just watch this video and you can see the excitement and creativity bubble over. And the best part, they get along and work as a team to build, create and collaborate.

If you aren’t familiar, KiwiCo. is a subscription service. The boxes are delivered to your door once a month. I have friends whose kids cannot wait for KiwiCo day to get their new box. My kids prefer to save them for rainy days. And I love that. If we have rainy days, snow days or sick days, this is the perfect answer to “I’m bored.”
When we first got our subscription, we got two kits, one for each of our kids. But I quickly discovered, the boys loved working together. Their little brains work differently. Jonathan, my 7 year old, is my out of the box thinker. He likes to read the instructions but then create his own version. Roen, my 5 year old, is my math and strategy guy. So I changed our subscription to one of the Kiwi Crates that they work on together. It’s truly amazing to see their little brains at work.
One of my favorite memories with KiwiCo is my boys spending two hours playing with the boxes, that’s right, the boxes before they even broke into the actual project. That’s part of the beauty of this. It truly gets the wheels of creativity turning. I am a huge fan of anything that isn’t device time. That’s what Ipad time is called in our house, device time. I don’t know about you, but it’s a constant tug and pull because I don’t want my kids obsessed with device time. This is a great answer to that.
I love that the directions are easy to follow. My 7 year old can read the directions and with little or no help from me, explain each step to divide up with his brother. And these projects are so unique, definitely not something I could come up with. What I marvel at each time, is what happens even after the Kiwi Crate is done. The boys continue to make their own adjustments or variations to the craft or project. It is obvious that these get the creativity going!
KiwiCo has so many different options for different ages and interests:
- Panda Crate 0-24 Months (Explore & Discover)
- Koala Crate for ages 2-4 (Play & Learn)
- Kiwi Crate for ages 5-8 (Science, Art, & More)
- Atlas Crate for ages 6-11 (Geography & Culture)
- Doodle Crate for ages 9-16+ (Art & Design)
- Tinker Crate for ages 9-16+ (Science & Engineering)
- Eureka Crate for ages 14-104 (Engineering & Design)
We’ve only tried the Kiwi Crate so far. I’m going to keep that subscription but add a second subscription for the Doodle Crate and possibly the Tinker Crate. I’m eager to see how each one challenges and inspires them in new ways.
